Deputy Sheriff Richard Carmona
Deputy Sheriff Richard Carmona has been with the Pima County (AZ) Sheriff’s Department for over 34 years. During this period he has served in patrol, criminal investigations as a detective, special weapons and tactics as a team leader and training officer and as the department surgeon. He is also a combat decorated U.S. Army Special Forces veteran.
Deputy Sheriff Carmona has repeatedly distinguished himself at a local, state, national and international level. He is one of the most highly decorated police officers in Arizona, having received the Police Medal of Honor, Medal of Valor, Medal of Merit, Medal of Achievement, two Purple Hearts, numerous commendations, the National “Top Cop” Award, the National SWAT Officer of the Year (Kolman Award), the National Tactical EMS Award, the National Tactical Officer’s Valor Award and many other forms of recognition for his contributions. He is a nationally recognized expert in military and police special operations to include terrorism and weapons of mass destruction.
In 2002 Dr. Carmona returned to uniformed service when he was nominated by the President of the United States and confirmed unanimously by the United States Senate to the be 17th Surgeon General of the United States. Vice Admiral Carmona served on active duty from 2002 to 2006, completing his statutory term and then returned to Arizona to resume his many previous law enforcement, academic and business commitments. He continues to contribute and provide leadership to local and national law enforcement as well as Federal government agencies, academic institutions and the private business sector. Dr. Carmona is also a distinguished professor at the University of Arizona.
